Poets drop pair of games to Redlands

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College softball team suffered a sweep at the hands of the University of Redlands on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs held on for a 9-7 win in the first game of the double header and won 12-1 in five innings in the night cap.

The Poets (6-5, 2-2 SCIAC) trailed 7-2 entering the home half of the fifth inning but cut the UR lead to just 8-7 though six innings.

Whittier's two-run fifth started with a two-out solo homerun from Kellie Canida. Brenda Thompson kept the inning alive with a two-out single and after a wild pitch advanced her to second base Mary Pacheco's bunt single put runners on the corners.

Thompson was brought home one batter later as an infield single by Molly Yriarte closed the gap to 7-4.

Redlands scored one run in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to 8-4.

The purple and gold half of the sixth started with a leadoff single by Amanda Carrasco. Jennifer Luders put runners on first and second with a single up the middle and a walk to Cynthia Loza loaded the bases with one out.

Canida's groundout to second scored Carrasco and Thompson's two-out single plated two runs to pull WC within one run at 8-7. The Poets' threat ended with two runners on base.

The Bulldogs (8-4, 6-0 SCIAC) added one insurance run in the top of the seventh and the purple and gold went down 1-2-3 in it's final at bat.

Canida finished the first game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, Thompson was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs and Pacheco and Luders each finished with two hits.

Heather Dady started on the rubber and went 1.0 innings. She allowed one run on two hits and two walks. Erica Zamora threw 3.2 innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits. She suffered the loss.

The Poets struggled in the second game and managed only two hits. Whittier scored first in the bottom of the first inning but the lead was short lived. Redlands scored eight in the second and added four in the fourth to put the Poets away.

Pacheco and Ashley Perez had the only Game 2 hits for Whittier.

Whittier returns to action tomorrow afternoon in a double header against La Verne.
