WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College
softball team suffered a sweep at the hands of the University of
Redlands on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs held on for a 9-7
win in the first game of the double header and won 12-1 in five
innings in the night cap.
The Poets (6-5, 2-2 SCIAC) trailed 7-2 entering the home half of
the fifth inning but cut the UR lead to just 8-7 though six
innings.
Whittier's two-run fifth started with a two-out solo homerun
from Kellie Canida. Brenda
Thompson kept the inning alive with a two-out single and
after a wild pitch advanced her to second base Mary
Pacheco's bunt single put runners on the corners.
Thompson was brought home one batter later as an infield single
by Molly Yriarte closed the gap to 7-4.
Redlands scored one run in the top of the sixth to extend its
lead to 8-4.
The purple and gold half of the sixth started with a leadoff
single by Amanda Carrasco. Jennifer Luders put
runners on first and second with a single up the middle and a walk
to Cynthia Loza loaded the bases with one out.
Canida's groundout to second scored Carrasco and Thompson's
two-out single plated two runs to pull WC within one run at 8-7.
The Poets' threat ended with two runners on base.
The Bulldogs (8-4, 6-0 SCIAC) added one insurance run in the top
of the seventh and the purple and gold went down 1-2-3 in it's
final at bat.
Canida finished the first game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and
four RBIs, Thompson was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs
and Pacheco and Luders each finished with two hits.
Heather Dady started on the rubber and went 1.0
innings. She allowed one run on two hits and two walks.
Erica Zamora threw 3.2 innings and gave up six
runs (five earned) on six hits. She suffered the loss.
The Poets struggled in the second game and managed only two
hits. Whittier scored first in the bottom of the first inning but
the lead was short lived. Redlands scored eight in the second and
added four in the fourth to put the Poets away.
Pacheco and Ashley Perez had the only Game 2
hits for Whittier.
Whittier returns to action tomorrow afternoon in a double header
against La Verne.
