THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran
scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back as it
completed the season sweep of the Whittier College baseball team
with a 14-2 win on Friday afternoon at Ullman Stadium.
The Kingsmen chased starting pitcher Keith
Hoefel after just a third of an inning. Hoefel allowed
seven runs (six earned) on three hits and three walks. The CLU
first frame feature four doubles, two singles, one error and nine
runs.
Whittier (8-29, 5-20 SCIAC) was held hitless in the second,
third and fourth innings before it got a one-out double from
Nick Amicone. He was stranded at second to end the
inning.
Darby Weppner collected his second hit of the
afternoon in the sixth inning but didn't get past second base
before the Poets were retired.
Andrew Vallejo finally got Whittier on the
board with a solo homerun to lead off the top of the seventh
inning, making the score 14-1. Chris Hylland
singled home Ben Cohon in the top of the ninth to
score the other WC run.
Cohon hit a double to left center to put himself in scoring
position.
WC used four arms in the game. Ryan Schwenn
entered the game with one out in the first and got through the
third inning before giving way to Andrew Pigott.
Pigott went 4.0 innings and allowed four hits and one run.
Casey Serna threw the final frame and gave up one
hit.
The Poets return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon as they host
Occidental in the series finale at 1 pm.
