WHITTIER, Calif. – Mary Pacheco,
Amanda Carrasco and Kellie Canida
played in their final regular season home game of their college
careers on Friday afternoon and combined for six hits and five of
Whittier's nine Game 1 runs as the trio led the purple and
gold to split with La Verne.
Pacheco reached a milestone in the first game with a 3-for-4
effort. She needed only two hits to get to 200 career base knocks
and a single in the first and third innings gave her the mark.
Despite reaching the 200-hit plateau, she wasn't finished as
she belted her 11th homerun of the season in the fourth.
Pacheco's round tripper brought in Canida and
Brenda Thompson who led off the inning with a pair
of singles.
The Poets (20-17, 11-11 SCIAC) kept the pressure on the Leopards
and loaded the bases in the fourth. La Verne walked in one run,
allowed an RBI infield single and gave up an RBI single to center
to cap a six-run, six-hit, inning by the purple and gold.
Whittier just missed out on putting the mercy rule into play on
ULV. The Leopards had a runner on first with two outs when
Heather Dady allowed a two-run homerun to keep the
game going.
La Verne added two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh
but it wasn't enough in the 9-6 win for WC.
Pacheco finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs,
Jennifer Luders connected on her sixth homerun of
the season and went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored and
Canida added two hits and two runs in the win.
Dady earned the win behind 5.0 solid innings in the circle. She
struck out two and gave up five runs.
Whittier cooled off in the second game and managed only four
hits. Pacheco and Carrasco each had a hit as did Cynthia
Loza and Morgan Oliver.
La Verne scored eight runs in the first two innings and added a
three-spot in the fourth. Whittier scored one run in each the
fourth and fifth innings.
The Poets conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon in
Claremont, Calif., with a twin bill against CMS at 12 and 2 pm.
