WHITTIER, Calif. – Starting pitcher
Kevin Pigott went 6.1 innings and only allowed
three runs but he was outdueled by Occidental's Ross
Pomerantz who tossed a complete game as the Tigers earned the
season sweep of the Poets behind a 6-3 win at Memorial Field on
Saturday afternoon.
Pigott rolled through the first three innings, but got in
trouble in the top of the fourth as Occidental pushed three runs
across the plate. The Tigers led off the inning with a double and
after Pigott got a fly out to right field they came with their
second double of the inning to put runners at second and third with
one out.
Pigott allowed an RBI-single to the ensuing batter who stole
second during the next at bat. The Tigers weren't finished as
a single down the right field line plated the second and third runs
of the frame.
The Poets (8-30, 5-21) went down in order in the fourth but
scored twice in the fifth to make it a one-run ballgame.
Reed Tuttle started the home half of the fifth
by breaking up Pomerantz's no-hitter with a single up the
middle. A one-out single by Pete Mitchell put
runners on first and second for Nick Amicone who
flied out to right field but allowed Andrew
Vallejo to advance to third in doing so.
Tyler Bogart cleared the bases with a two
RBI-triple to the deepest part of the ball park to make the score
3-2. Josh Genzuk hit what appeared to be the
game-tying single but Occidental's Casey Harms made a diving
play to rob Genzuk of a hit.
Pigott went back to work in the sixth and a leadoff single by
the Tigers was all for nothing. Occidental attempted a sacrifice
bunt but Pigott fielded his position and was able to start the
1-6-3 double play.
The senior right-hander opened the seventh frame by recording an
out and a one-out single on his 69th pitch of the afternoon was his
last pitch. Taylor Fallon relieved Pigott, picked
off a runner and first and got a ground out to end the top of the
seventh.
Vallejo started a rally in the bottom of the seventh with a
triple to left center. Occidental pulled their infield in and the
move paid off. Mitchell hit a high chopper to the shortstop who
came home with the ball to get Vallejo at the plate. The Tigers got
Amicone to ground out to end the inning.
The Tigers added two runs in the eighth, both on a throwing
error, to take a 5-2 lead. OXY tried a sacrifice bunt that was
fielded by Fallon just off the mound. Fallon went to third but
threw behind Mitchell which allowed two runs to score.
The Tigers added one more run in the ninth and a solo homerun to
left field by Jacob Storrer was the rest of the
offense the Poets would generate.
Pigott went 6.1 innings and scattered sevens. He allowed three
runs and suffered the loss. Pomerantz struck out seven and gave up
five hits in picked up the win.
The Poets will play their final two games of the season, next
weekend, starting with a 3 pm home tile against Redlands on Friday.
