REDLANDS, Calif. –
The Whittier College baseball team suffered a three-game sweep this
weekend to the University of Redlands. The Bulldogs took the first
of the series at Whittier on Friday afternoon, 16-2, and scored
eight runs in each game on Saturday to complete the
sweep.
The Poets
(7-23, 4-14 SCIAC) had trouble slowing the bats of Redlands in the
Friday game. UR totaled 24 hits and scored in all but two innings
of the game.
WC went
through six pitchers and had no one go longer than three frames.
Albert Payano went 3.0 innings and gave up three
runs on six hits. The loss was suffered by Ryan
Schwenn who got tagged for four runs on five hits in the
first innings.
Reed Tuttle went 2-for-2
in Friday's loss and scored one of two runs for Whittier on
the afternoon.
In the
first game on Saturday the Poets scored three runs in the fifth
inning to take a 3-1 lead but Redlands cut the lead to 3-2 after
the home half of the fifth and reclaimed the lead with a four spot
in the sixth.
The
Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the seventh en route to the
8-3 win.
WC
collected 11 hits with four coming in the fifth. The inning began
with a single from Ian Bablewski. He moved to
second on a single by Alex Mitchell and later
scored on a double by Reed Tuttle. Mitchell and
Tuttle were brought home one batter later on a two-RBI triple form
Jacob Storrer.
Keith Hoefel started and
went 5.0 innings. He allowed just two runs (one earned) on seven
hits but did not factor into the decision. Austin
Nogueira suffered the loss as he gave up six runs (four
earned) on seven this in 1.0 innings of work.
The
Bulldogs put the Poets away early in the second game of the twin
bill with a five-run second inning. Whittier answered with one run
in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-1 but Redlands kept the pressure
on with two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Whittier's run in
the fifth started with a one-out walk to Cory
Goodchild. He scored two batters later on an RBI-double
from Tuttle.
Taylor Fallon started on
the mound and went 5.1 innings. He allowed seven runs on 11
hits.
The Poets
return to action next weekend with a three-game set against
Occidental.
