CLAREMONT, Calif. –
The Whittier College softball team had its season come to an end on
Friday as the Poets were eliminated from the 2010 Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason
tournament after a pair of losses on the first day of
action.
Whittier
(20-21) lost to top-seeded Claremont-M-S in the first game, 9-0,
and lost to La Verne, 6-0, in the first elimination game of the
tournament.
The Poets
totaled only eight hits in the two games combined and failed to
push a run across the plate. Kellie Canida,
Brenda Thompson and Courtney
Grana all had base knocks against the Athenas while
Mary Pacheco and Amanda Carrasco
joined Canida and Grana with hits in the second game.
Pacheco
went 2-for-3 in the second game.
The Poets
allowed all nine runs in the first three innings to Claremont-M-S.
The Athenas scored three in the first, two in the second and put
the run rule into affect with four runs in the third. The loss was
the third in as many outings against CMS.
WC and La
Verne played scoreless through the first two innings before the
Leopards exploded with five runs in the third. ULV added one run in
the top of the fourth en route to the 6-0 win.
All three
of Whittier's pitchers tossed at least one inning in the two
games. Heather Dady started both games but only
went a combined 4.0 innings.
Jessica Rosnack relieved
Dad y at the start of the second of the first game but was tagged
for five runs on six hits in just 1.1 innings of work. She came
back to throw 4.0 scoreless innings in the second game. She allowed
just one hit to the 14 batters she faced.
The Poets
hit the 20-win plateau for the fourth consecutive season and made
the SCIAC postseason tournament for the second straight
year.
