REDLANDS, Calif. – A
pair of 10-6 scores was the story of the second and final day at
the Inland Empire Classic as the Poets went 1-1 which features a
win over SCIAC foe Claremont-M-S in non-conference
action.
Whittier
opened the Classic on Saturday with a win over Occidental but fell
in the night cap to Division I UC Davis. The split on Sunday pushes
the purple and gold's record to 2-6 on the young
season.
WC opened
Day 2 of the tournament by scoring five first half goals against
Claremont-M-S. The Stags matched that total but the difference was
a 3-0 third quarter by Whittier. The Poets added two goals against
CMS' one in the final frame en route to the four-goal
win.
Rilesh Desai handed out
three assists to go along with a pair of goals and field blocks to
pace the Poets.
Brandon Babot tallied two
first quarter goals and drew four ejections while Will Jackson tacked on a man-up goal in the fourth
quarter.
Robert Nihei scored a
goal, drew an ejection and set-up Erick Gonzalez's 5-meter penalty goal.
Chad Evenrud made 12 saves
which includes six in the third quarter.
In the
final game of the IE Classic, top ranked Redlands made it 2-for-2
against the Poets on the year with the 10-6 win.
Whittier
held a 5-4 halftime lead but was outscored 3-0 in the third quarter
which proved the difference. The Bulldogs scored two more in fourth
quarter while WC added one goal.
Keary Schlactus scored two
goals which includes a 5-meter in the first. Jackson dished out
three assists and had a steal while Babot drew four
ejections.
Evenrud
made 10 saves in the loss.
