THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier
College volleyball team had a rough go at it this weekend at the
Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitation dropping all four of its matches on Friday
and Saturday.
The Poets opened up the tournament against Willamette on Friday
evening but lost in straight sets, 25-18, 25-18, 25-17. The Poets
had the tough task of facing No. 16 Pacific Lutheran to cap
Friday's action and dropped its second consecutive
straight-set match to PLU, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20.
Adriana Moore and Alayna Rigo
combined for 38 digs in the tournament opener as the two freshman
went for 24 and 14, each, respectively.
Vanessa Amran collected 24 assists while
Courtney Dickerson and Rigo tallied seven and six
kills apiece.
Despite a straight-set sweep the purple and gold battled hard
with the Lutes. Amran turned around and added 15 assists to her
total for the tournament , Rigo put away five more kills and
Shannon Orlins and Lauren Whiteman added six and five kills, each, in the loss.
The second day of the tournament featured a pair of familiar
foes from the Northwest Conference Invitational.
Whittier faced George Fox in its first match and won the first
set, 26-24. GFU rebounded to take the next three and the match,
3-1. The Poets fell in the second, 25-18, the third, 25-9, and the
fourth, 25-17.
Moore registered 18 digs and Rigo (8 kills) and Orlins (12
kills) totaled 20 kills.
In the final match of the tournament the Poets got down 2-0 to
Lewis & Clark before it forced a fourth set. LC won 25-22,
25-12 but the purple and gold picked up a 25-21 win in the third.
The final set was tightly contested but the Poets fell 25-22.
Maria Montero had 22 assists, Rigo had nine
kills and Whiteman finished with six.
The Poets return to action next Saturday night against UC Santa
Cruz and La Verne. Both matches will be played at the University of
La Verne.
