Redlands surges past Poets in second half

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands outscored the Poets' men's basketball team 27-13 over the final 10 minutes of the game as it knocked off Whittier, 83-66, on Saturday night in SCIAC action.

The loss drops the purple and gold to 2-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action and 7-9 overall.

Whittier had three players finish in double figures led by Paul Davis who poured in a team-high 16 points. Davis was 6-of-10 from the field and knocked down a pair of three-point jumps shots in a losing effort.

Ricky Kamayatsu was 50 percent from deep as all 15 of his points came by way of the long ball. He added three steals and two rebounds to his stat line.

Fellow senior Damon Perry recorded a double-double going for 15 points and 10 rebounds. Perry was an efficient 6-of-8 from the field but only converted 3-of-7 free throws.

As a team Whittier was just 11-of-19 from the charity stripe despite shooting over 45 percent (24-of-53) from the floor. Redlands shot 48 percent of the field but made 19-of-23 (83 percent) free throws which proved the difference in the game.

The Bulldogs went into the intermission up 34-30 and outscored the Poets 49-36 in the second stanza.

Whittier will return to action on Wednesday, January 26, as it hosts Cal Lutheran at 7:30 pm.
