Poets rout Cal Lutheran, 78-59

WHITTIER, Calif. – It was a game the Poets needed as they neared the midway point of the conference season and the Whittier men's basketball team delivered with a 78-59 rout of Cal Lutheran on Wednesday evening at the Graham Athletics Center.

The Poets (8-9, 3-3 SCIAC) scored the game's first 14 points and never looked back en route to their largest SCIAC winning margin of the season.

All 15 players on the roster recorded time as head coach Rock Carter was able to clear the bench.

Paul Davis led the charge with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting while Damon Perry and Ricky Kamayatsu added 11 and 10 points, each, respectively.

Greg Preer showed his all around ability, scoring seven points with eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks.

As a team the Poets shot 54 percent from the field (27-of-50) and were 16-of-20 from the charity stripe. The Kingsmen (8-9, 2-4 SCIAC) left 13 points on the court as they finished 24-of-37 from the foul line and shot just 32 percent from the field.

The Poets had 20 assists on its 27 made buckets led by Willie Mebane who had a game-high six.

Whittier look to push its record above .500 in conference play as it hosts Caltech on Saturday night at 7 pm.
