RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Whittier College men's soccer team had a wake up call as they fell to the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands 6-0 running their record to 5-8 overall and 5-5 in SCIAC play.
The last time these two teams met, Redlands had to use overtime to beat the Poets, but the story was different this time around as Redlands outshot Whittier 25-10 claiming their 13 overall win, while maintaining their perfect 10-0 record in SCIAC play.
Both teams came out aggressive on both ends of the field putting a plethora of shots on goal, but none were able to connect until the Bulldogs Charles Izydorek tallied the first goal of the game and his eighth on the season 30 seconds before the first half horn sounded putting Redlands up 1-0 entering the break.
Coming out of the break, Redlands then connected on their second goal of the game a minute into the second half from Cody Carlson as Poet goalkeeper fumbled the ball allowing for Carlson to knock in his eighth goal of the season.
Adolfo Santos then came down the field and had a good look at the goal but missed wide. Redlands then came down on the ensuing possession and Pat Roraff received a feed from Jamie Griffin in the middle of the box that he was able to finish putting the Bulldogs up 3-0.
With 15 minutes remaining in the game Poet goalkeeper David Diaz was taken out and Taylor Ayres relieved him, but with six minutes left, Ayres was scored upon by Grahame Fritz that put Redlands up 5-0 and a lead they would not give up.
For the game, Santos led the Poets with three shot, while Patricio Carregha had two with one being on goal.
Whittier returns to the field as they take on the Stags of Claremont-M-S within the friendly confines of the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field, Wednesday, October 19 beginning at 7pm.
