Boxscore (Cal Lutheran 10, Whittier 3)
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College men's water polo team traveled to Thousand Oaks Calif. to take on the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University but was unable to pull out the win as they fell 10-3.
Whittier now drops to 7-15 overall and 0-4 in SCIAC play, while Cal Lutheran moves to 12-8, and 3-1 in SCIAC.
The Kingsmen jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter but sophomore Erick Gonzalez put Whittier on the scoreboard as he knocked in the first penalty shot of the game to get the Poets within three after one frame.
Gonzalez then came back in the second and got the Poets within two early in the quarter as he capitalized on a man up situation but Cal Lutheran would then go on a 6-0 run in the next three quarters thanks to Dejan Novakovic who contributed two goals and two steals helping the Kingsmen take a 10-2 lead heading into the fourth.
In the final minutes of regulation Gonzalez then scored a hat trick as he found the back of the goal from seven meters to put the score at 10-3 but that would be all the Poets would get as Cal Lutheran would roll to the 10-3 victory running their win streak to four matches.
The Purple and Gold are still seeking their first SCIAC win on the season and will travel to take on the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands on Saturday, October 29 beginning at 11am. They will then hit the road that same day to travel to take on the Panthers of Chapman University beginning at 5pm.
