Whittier wraps up WWPA Championships with loss to Chapman

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Whittier College men's water polo team wrapped up their 2011 season with a narrow loss to the Panthers of Chapman University in the 9th place game in the WWPA Championships  7-5.

The Poets finish the 2011 season 12-21 overall, and 4-6 in SCIAC play and finished in 5th place in the SCIAC Postseason tournament.

The Panthers Chase Middlesworth scored with 24 seconds remaining to lift Chapman to a 7-5 win over Whittier to claim 9th place, while Whittier finishes in 10th ahead of Occidental and La Verne.

Chapman trailed 5-4 in the fourth quarter after senior Keary Schlactus who again had a strong performance scored on a 6-on-5 attack with 6:21 to play. Mark Alvarado would then come down and tie the game up at 5-5 with a 6-on-5 goal for Chapman.

Then within the last 30 seconds, Chapman added another two goals to secure the victory thanks to Middlesworth and Pierre Masson who tacked on the seventh goal for Chapman with just one second remaining.

For the game Ryan Rock had 10 saves in goal, while Taylor Rozskos had eight for Chapman.
