WHITTIER, Calif. – Heather Dady went the distance in Game 1 and the bats came alive in Game 2 as the Whittier softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of George Fox, 3-1 and 10-1, on Saturday afternoon at Palmer Field.
Dady tossed all seven innings and held the Bruins to four hits and one run to earn her first win of the season. The Poets (4-0) scored one run in each the first, second and third innings.
Whittier opened its half of the first with a single from Courtney Grana. Ashely Perez attempted to sacrifice Grana to second but was able to beat the throw to put two on with no one out. Molly Yriarte gave the Poets an early lead with an RBI single up the middle to score Grana.
In the second, Courtney DeLano drew a leadoff walk and was pinch run for by Brenda Thompson. Cindy Loza put Thompson in scoring position with a sacrifice and after Nikki Mendoza reached on an infield single, Denisse Martinez drove in Thompson with an RBI double to left center.
A leadoff walk started the third inning and the Poets pushed their third run across the plate after an RBI groundout by Jennifer Luders. Yriarte scored on the Luders grounder to cap the Whittier runs in the first game.
Dady got into trouble in the sixth but worked out of it and sat the Bruins down in order in the final frame to preserve the win.
The Poets got off to a fast start in Game 2 after letting George Fox (1-3) score in the top of the first. Mickala Gonzales had a two-RBI single, Luders had an RBI groundout and DeLano singled up the middle to score one run.
Whittier added to its 4-1 lead with a run in the second and added three more insurance runs in the third. Gonzales started the third with a double to right field and later scored on a DeLano single. Perez did the rest of the damage with a two-RBI single.
The run rule went into effect with two more runs in the fourth. DeLano picked up her third RBI with a sacrifice fly and Loza singled home the 10th run of the game for the purple and gold.
DeLano picked up the win by going 3.2 innings. She entered the game with one out in the first inning and allowed just two hits. Anna Cade made her debut with the Poets by tossing a perfect fifth inning.
The Poets have a quick turnaround as they host Redlands, tomorrow, at 12 pm and 2 pm.
