Whittier suffers doubleheader setback at La Verne

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier women's softball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday afternoon as the University of La Verne picked up a doubleheader sweep, 3-0 and 8-4, at Wheeler Park.

Heather Dady was strong from the circle in the first game, pitching all six innings and allowing five hits with four strike outs. Dady suffered the loss in allowing just three runs (two earned).

The Poets managed only five hits in the loss.

La Verne scored in the bottom of the first and held its one-run lead through the visiting half of the fourth frame. The Leopards tacked on two more insurance runs in the fourth.

In the second game, Whittier trailed 1-0 after three innings but a Janae Townsend RBI-single up the middle tied the score at 1-1. ULV answered responded with a run in its half of the fourth but exploded for six runs in the fifth inning.

The Poets came back with three runs in the sixth but that would prove to be as close as they would get. Three straight walks loaded the bases for Whittier and a sacrifice fly scored the first run.  The final two runs came via a two-RBI single from Brenda Thompson.

Courtney DeLano suffered the loss. She allowed nine hits and four runs in 4.0 innings.

The Poets return to action today, against Occidental, at 12 and 2 pm.
