LOS ANGELES – The Whittier softball team got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon as it took Game 2 of a doubleheader against Occidental, 6-0. The Tigers beat the Poets in the first game, 4-3.

Whittier (9-5, 3-5 SCIAC) jumped out on Occidental early, scoring in its first plate of appearance of the second game. Molly Yriarte reached on a fielder's choice which scored Brenda Thompson who opened the stanza with a walk.

The one run proved more than enough for Whittier which limited the Tigers to just five hits in the shutout.

The purple and gold added to its lead with five runs in the fifth inning. Janae Townsend plated two runs with a single, Nikki Mendoza singled in two of her own runs and Thompson scored Mendoza with an RBI-single to right field.

The duo of Heather Dady and Courtney DeLano struck out four.

Despite scoring six runs, Whittier was held to just five hits. Townsend and Mendoza each had multi-hit afternoon's in the win.

In the first game, it was Occidental who scored first with three runs in the home half of the second. The Poets clawed back into the game with a run in the fourth and then tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth.

DeLano provided the first run of the game for Whittier with a solo homerun to center field. The Poets did their damage in the fifth frame with two outs. DeLano drove in Ashley Perez and Yriarte with single to right field but the Tigers answered with the game winning run in the bottom of the inning.

Dady started the first game and last just 1.2 innings. She allowed three runs on four hits. DeLano finished the game tossing 4.1 innings. She allowed just one run.

The Poets return to action on Thursday, March 10, as they host Emerson.
