WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier softball team combined for only eight hits as Cal Lutheran swept the Poets, 3-0 and 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Hutton Field.
Whittier (23-15, 11-11 SCIAC) managed just three bases hits in the first game but was plagued by three errors. Starting pitcher Heather Dady allowed three runs but none were earned.
Cal Lutheran scored two runs in the second on a pair of errors and added it's third in the fourth frame on the Poets' third throwing error of the afternoon.
Dady scattered five hits over 4.0 innings in suffering the loss.
Whittier had a chance to jump on the Regals early in the second game but left the bases loaded in the top of the first. CLU responded with a run in the bottom of the inning and added one run in each the fourth and fifth stanzas to take a 3-0 lead.
The Poets finally broke through in the sixth on an RBI-single up the middle from Cindy Loza. However, Loza was caught at second trying to advance a base.
Whittier put the leadoff runner on in the last inning but after a deep fly out from Molly Yriarte, Mickala Gonzales lined into a double play to end the game.
A total of 10 runners were left on base in the second game with at least one coming in six of the seven innings.
The loss is the fourth straight for the purple and gold. Prior to this week's action, Whittier had won six straight games.
The Poets will look to get back on track before the start of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament as it hits the road next Saturday afternoon for a twin bill against Claremont-M-S.
