REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier softball team suffered its fourth and fifth straight defeats on Saturday afternoon as the University of Redlands completed the season sweep of the Poets with a 15-7 and a 2-0 win the Field of Dreams.
The two teams combined to score 22 runs in the first game but it was Redlands' nine in the sixth frame that proved the difference.
Whittier trailed 6-5 after five innings but plated two runs in the top of the sixth on a two-RBI single by Molly Yriarte to take a one-run lead. Brenda Thompson and Cindy Loza scored on the Yriarte single.
The Poets' first runs of the game came in the first inning where they scored four runs on four hits. Mickala Gonzales blasted a three-run home run and Denisse Martinez hit an RBI-single to put the Poets up 4-0.
Redlands scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth to trim the lead to 4-3. However, the Poets added a run in the fifth to push its lead to 5-3.
Gonzales and Yriarte each had three RBIs and Loza scored three runs in the loss. Thompson and Yriarte had multi-hit afternoons.
The night cap of the doubleheader proved a pitcher's duel. Jessica Rosnack scattered five hits in 6.0 innings. She allowed two runs (one earned) and had one strike out.
Neither team managed much offense through the first five innings. Whittier was held to one hit on the afternoon while Redlands had five.
The sixth inning is where the only runs were scored. The Bulldogs scored on an RBI-triple and took a 2-0 lead after an error prolonged the inning.
Redlands used two pitchers who combined to strike out eight.
Whittier will look to get back to its winning ways tomorrow morning with a doubleheader against Chapman. First pitcher at Palmer Field is slated for 10 am.
