CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier softball team won its 20th and 21st games as they swept the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Friday afternoon to the sound of 5-4 and 9-5.
Game 1
Whittier (21-11, 11-7 SCIAC) struck first in Game 1 as they put across two runs in the second inning behind back to back homeruns by Denisse Martinez and Courtney DeLano.
But that wasn't sufficient enough as the Poets put up another three runs in the bottom of the third behind a three run blast by Mickala Gonzales who put the Poets up 5-0 and a lead they would not relinquish.
But the Sagehens battled back as they struck for four runs in the top half of the seventh behind four singles and a double to put the score at 5-4. But Heather Dady settled down and recorded the final two outs of the game to preserve her seventh win of the season.
Dady pitched a complete game, giving up four runs on eleven hits.
Game 2
In Game 2 the Poets continued swinging hot bats as they recorded nine runs on eight hits.
Whittier got on the scoreboard first as they rattled off two runs in the bottom half of the fourth thanks to a hit by Martinez who drove in Gonzales and Molly Yriarte to put the Poets up 2-0.
Then in the top half of the seventh the Sagehens got on the scoreboard putting across five runs behind a three run blast by Marcantoni knotting up the game at five apiece forcing extra innings.
But the Poets would not go away quietly as they put across four runs in the eighth thanks to senior Jennifer Luders pinch hit grand slam that sealed the win for the Poets 9-5.
Jennifer Rosnack started on the mound for the Poets going 6.1 innings giving up five runs on seven hits.
DeLano came in as relief throwing 1.2 innings and recording her eighth win of the season.
