LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College women's volleyball team was swept for the second time this season by the Tigers of Occidental College Tuesday evening 16-25,17-25, 13-25.
Whittier who was coming off of an impressive win over the Saghens of Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday was unable to get much offense going as they finished with a .089 hitting percentage compared to Occidentals .327.
Senior Alyssa Sialaris after achieving SCIAC Player of the Week Honors and National Recognition last week was held to nine kills on 37 attempts for a .054 hitting percentage her lowest output yet this season. This was due to a big front three of Oxy Alyssa Mort, Aly Fritz, and Dana Michels who combined for six blocks in the game that shut down the Poet offensive attack of Sialaris and Alayna Rigo who finished with five kills on 29 attempts for a -.034 hitting percentage.
1st Team All-SCIAC Performer from last year Logan Boyer-Hayse finished with a game high 11 kills on 27 attempts to go with 4 service aces and nine digs.
Defensively Whittier was led by Alyssa Acosta who finished with a team high 13 digs, while freshman Torrey Mitsunaga finished with 14 assists.
In the first set, Whittier jumped out in front 3-0 but saw Oxy storm back to even the game up at 9-9. But Oxy then went on a 6-1 run that helped them gain a lead at 15-10. Whittier however was able to pull within three at 16-13, 17-14, and then 18-15 before Oxy went on a 7-1 run that closed out the set.
To open the second Oxy opened on a 9-1 run that gave the Tigers a lead that they would not relinquish behind a .323 hitting percentage. Then in the final set, Whittier saw Oxy combine for 15 kills on 34 attempts for a .353 hitting percentage that pushed them to the 25-13 victory.
Whittier now hits the road as they travel to Colorado to take part in the Colorado Invitational which takes places on October 12 and 13, where they will take on four non-conference opponents.
