REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College
softball team split with No. 9 University of Redlands this
afternoon who are atop the standings in SCIAC falling in game one
9-0 but coming back in game two to win 2-0.
Whittier improves to 12-10, 5-9 SCIAC, while Redlands drops
their first game of the season dropping to 19-1, 13-1 SCIAC .
Game 1 (Redlands – 9, Whittier – 0)
In the first game, Redlands added two runs in the first
and second innings and then added five in the fourth to take the
first game of the series. Courtney
DeLano started for the Poets and went 3.2 innings
giving up nine runs on 10 hits to go with three strikeouts, while
her counterpart Kayla Uphold went a complete game going 5.0 innings
giving up four hits.
The Purple & Gold were unable to get any offense going as
they managed a mere four hits but threatened in the first after
they got runners in scoring position but got their rally cut short
with a groundout, a strikeout, and a pop up.
This was the only offense they were able to get as they were
shut down over the next four innings.
The Poets were led on offense by Emi
Shimamoto who finished 2-3.
Game 2 (Whittier – 2, Redlands –
0)
In game two Whittier received a pitching gem from Jessica
Rosnack who went 7.0 innings giving up six hits
striking out two moving her record to 5-4.
Rosnack held the Bulldog offense scoreless and received two runs
in the sixth inning as they put together two hits from Xzandra
Miranda-Castro and Denisse
Martinez with a walk and two fielder's choices that
brought two runs across.
In the ensuing inning Rosnack shut out the Bulldogs one, two,
three and preserved the two run victory.
Whittier now begins their spring break as they travel up north
to San Francisco as they take on Holy Names, Tuesday, March 27 with
game times slated for 12pm and 2pm.
