LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team snapped their eight game winning streak with a 3-0 loss to the Leopards of the University of La Verne dropping their record to 21-16, 15-12 SCIAC.
With the win La Verne secures their 20th SCIAC title and now has an automatic berth into the NCAA West Regional.
La Verne starting pitcher Phil Schick outdueled Whittier ace Ryan Schwenn for the Leopards with a strong outing, pitching 7.1 shutout innings while recording five strikeouts, six hits and stranding seven on base.
Schwenn pitched 8.0 strong innings giving up three runs (2 earned) on eight hits to go with three strikeouts breaking his streak of eight wins but continues to lead SCIAC in wins at nine.
La Verne took an early lead in the third behind a sacrifice fly from Zach Canfield but struck again in the bottom of the fifth behind a Cody Hazel solo shot that extended the Leopard lead to three.
Whittier was led on offense by Andrew Vallejo and Corey Jensen who each finished 2-4.
The Poets will conclude the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, April 28 as they host the Tigers of Occidental College at 1:00pm in Whittier, Calif.
