REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College women's basketball team dropped their third straight contest Saturday evening to the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands 67-56 to drop to 4-10, 1-4 SCIAC.
With the win, Redlands improves to 9-3, 3-1 SCIAC.
The Bulldogs opened up the contest on a 13-5 run but saw Whittier mount a comeback to pull within two 19-17 after two baskets from Alex Coon, two free throws from Danielle Quinones, and a jumper from Casceal Swaggard. Whittier kept the game close and pulled within five with 57 seconds to play in the first half until Redlands extended their lead to 12 after they closed out the frame scoring seven unanswered to go into the break up 40-28.
Coming out of the break, Redlands continued to pour on the offense going on a 14-3 run capped off with two three balls from Marika Staton. This extended the Bulldog lead to 54-31. Whittier replied with their own run scoring nine straight that pulled the Purple & Gold within 14 but the margin proved to be too difficult to overcome down the stretch as UR outscored Whittier 10-8 over the final 6:50 to hold on for the nine point victory.
The Poets saw Quinones reach double figures tallying 11 points on 3-5 shooting, while dishing out three assists and notching two steals, while Coon reached double digits once again totaling a team high 16 points on 7-11 shooting, while hauling in a team high six rebounds.
For Redlands, Claire Stach led all scorers pouring in a game high 24 points going 11-14 from the field, while Staton finished with 18 points on 3-9 shooting and 8 rebounds.
Whittier returns to the court as they welcome in the 2011-12 SCIAC Champion Cal Lutheran University, Thursday, January 17 with tip-off set for 7:30pm.
