POMONA, Calif. – The Whittier College men's soccer team dropped their second straight SCIAC contest Saturday morning as they couldn't hold on to a 1-0 lead early as they fell 2-1 to Pomona-Pitzer.
Whittier now sits alone in 4th place in the SCIAC standings with a 7-5-1, 6-3-1 SCIAC record. The previous time these two teams met, Whittier managed to hold onto a 1-0 victory but this time around the Sagehens Paul Picciano was the spoiler adding both goals on the morning propelling PP to the one goal victory.
The Purple & Gold jumped out in front early in the 10th minute with an unassisted goal from Jon Elvins (Bideford, England). This would be the lone goal scored in the first half as Whittier would outshoot the Sagehens 6-3.
The game remained at a one goal differential until the 79th minute when Picciano added the equalizer from Nathan Shekita but wasn't done there as he would add the eventual game winner five minutes later from Drew Lind that sent PP to the come from behind victory.
For the game, Whittier held the advantage on shots 10-8 and corner kicks 5-2 but was forced to play a man down for almost 75 percent of the game after Pablo Gomez (Cardiff by the Sea) received a red card in the 19th minute.
Lucas Depinna (Portland, OR) led the offense taking three shots with two being on goal, while Gary Kelman (Aberdeen, Scotland) took two shots.
Whittier returns to action this Monday evening, October 14 when they host Occidental College at 7:00pm.
