WHITTIER, Calif. – Starting off Homecoming Weekend the Whittier College volleyball team dropped their season series with Pomona-Pitzer falling Friday night 25-17, 25-20, 25-16.
This marks their second straight loss by way of sweep dropping their record to 13-10, 4-6 SCIAC.
Behind -.023, .163, and .038 hitting percentages for the match the Poets were unable to get any momentum going late as they fell in straight sets.
Whittier kept the first set close at 12-10 before the Sagehens would rattle off seven straight points to extend their lead to 19-10 en route to the easy 25-17 win.
In the second the Purple & Gold came back and held an advantage 17-13 and then 21-19 but again PP would rally with six unanswered points to take set two 25-21.
In the third and final set, WC put out a strong effort by jumping out quickly 4-0 but it would be short lived as Pomona-Pitzer would storm back to take an 11-10 lead and wouldn't look back as they went on to increase their lead 20-12 eventually finishing off the match 25-16.
Allie Frappier for PP led all players with 16 kills on 43 attempts for a .209 hitting percentage. She also collected 12 digs. For Whittier Alayna Rigo (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Casie Lowden (Glendora, Calif.) had eight kills a piece, while Rigo had 12 digs.
The back row came up big on both sides with Beth Smilkstein for Pomiona-Pitzer finishing with a game high 24 digs, while Alyssa Acosta (Whittier, calif.) tallied 21.
Whittier returns to the court tomorrow, Saturday October 19 as they travel to into Los Angeles, Calif. to take on Occidental College beginning at 4:00pm.
