REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College men's soccer team saw their three game winning streak come to a close Wednesday evening as they dropped their season series with Redlands 3-1 at Farquhar Field under rainy conditions.
With the loss the Poets now drop into a tie for 3rd Place in the SCIAC standings with Claremont-M-S posting a record of 7-4-1, 6-2-1 SCIAC trailing Cal Lutheran (8-2-2, 6-1-2 SCIAC) and Redlands (7-2, 7-2 SCIAC).
Redlands got things started in the 17th minute when Will Walker whipped in a dangerous cross to the head of Evan Keny-Guyer who buried his header into the back of the goal to put the Bulldogs up early. In the 35th minute, UR came down again and added their second goal of the contest thanks to Charles Izydorek who headed in a cross from AJ VanderStaay.
Whittier had opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the first half outshooting Redlands 14-9, but were turned away from Bulldog keeper Andreas Silva who came up with five huge saves to keep the score at 2-0 at the break.
Out of the break, UR tallied their third goal of the contest in the 67th minute from Jared Bales who connected on a cross from the left side. A Poet defender attempted to clear the ball on the play, but it deflected off of his foot and into the back of the net for an own goal.
Whittier finally found the back of the goal in the 89th minute when junior midfielder Tyler Crough (Fresno, Calif.) tapped in his shot after a deflection in the box but it wouldn't be enough as Redlands would secure the two goal victory and the crucial Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
On the night, Whittier outshot Redlands 22-17, but was at a disadvantage on corner kicks, 4-2. Devin Guthrie (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Francis Maxwell (Clydebank, Scotland) each tallied five shots a piece, while freshman goalie Jorge Rivas (Lake Forest, Calif.) collected four saves.
Whittier has a short turnaround as they hit the road once again for a match-up against Pomona-Pitzer this Saturday, October 12 beginning at 11:00am.
