WHEATON, Ill. – Freshman Margo Campos (Norwalk, Calif.) tossed in a career high 23 points on 8-10 shooting Saturday afternoon but it wasn't enough to pull off the victory over Buena Vista as the Beavers rolled to the 108-82 victory to wrap up the Beth Baker Classic.
The Poets who extend their losing skid to four games couldn't match the double threat of Malarie Gilley and Lexi Fisher for the Beavers who tossed in 27 and 26 points, each respectively as BV went on to shoot 59% from the field, which included 43% from three point territory.
The 82 points for the Poets is the largest offensive output for the season shooting 34% from the field and 30% from three point territory. Nicole Ruffino (Las Vegas, NV) started off the game scoring the first seven points for the Purple & Gold en route to finishing with a career high 17 points on 6-18 shooting. Dannika Navales-Lugtu (San Francisco, Calif.) got the start at the point guard position and finished with a season high 11 points coupled with three assists and four steals.
Whittier used a big second half scoring 47 points but it wouldn't be enough as the Beavers would put up 49 themselves to secure the victory. Freshman Kaylah Alexander (Altoona, PA) barely missed her first career double double as she hauled in 10 boards to go with eight points.
Ruffino tied the game up with a three ball to start off the contest and then pulled Whittier within a point 6-5 with a layin but that's as close as the Poets would get as the Beavers would go on an 11-2 run to open up a ten point lead before extending it to twenty, which they would grab late in the half before going into the break up 59-35.
The Poets came out with five unanswered point to open the second half and then put together seven in a row midway through but these would be the largest runs they would gather the rest of the game as the Beavers would go out in front by 30 late in regulation before cruising to the 26 point victory.
Whittier returns to action as they host the Alumni next Sunday, December 1 beginning at 3:00pm before returning to competition Thursday, December 5 as they host Claremont-M-S to open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play beginning at 7:30pm.
