CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team for the first time this season was shut out after they dropped a 10-0 decision to Pomona-Pitzer Friday afternoon to open their three game series.

Whittier now drops to .500 on the season at 7-7 and 5-2 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 11-3.

On a cold and rainy day in Claremont, Calif. the Sagehens were able to combine for 10 runs on 10 hits, while limiting the Poets to a season low six hits.

PP got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the first and then opened up the game with nine runs covering the final four innings.  Whittier had an opportunity in the early stages of the game to even the game at one and maybe take a lead.  Josh Genzuk led off the third inning with a single to left and on the ensuing at bat for Cody Martinez the Purple & Gold fell upon bad luck when he struck a line drive to right center that was caught by the center fielder in a play that would make the espn highlight reel.  With Genzuk running on the play and making it to third the Sagehens were able to double him up stopping the Poet rally short.

In the 4th and leading just by a run, the Sagehens opened the game wide open with a four run, two out rally sparked by Gentili who drove one to right field for a three run shot.  This put PP in front 5-0 and they wouldn't look back as they cruised to the 10 run victory after seven innings of play.

Ben Cerami was tagged with the loss for the Poets after going 5.0 innings giving up six runs (two earned) on six hits.  He now drops to 1-3 on the season.  Bruml the Pomona-Pitzer ace faced the Poets and went the distance throwing a complete game shutout, while striking out seven running his record to 3-1.

Whittier saw six different players each record a hit, while Gentili for Pomona-Pitzer finished 3-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in.

The three game series commences tomorrow at Memorial Field with game times set for 11:00am and 2:30pm, weather permitting.
