PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College men's soccer team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening and came away with a 4-1 victory over the Beavers of Caltech to move to 2-2, 1-0 SCIAC.
After going 1-2 in non-conference bouts, Whittier came out of the gates quickly against the Beavers adding two goals in the first half. The first came from Francis Maxwell (Hydebark, Scotland) who headed in a cross that came off of a free kick. The second came from defender Ian Cromwell (Pleasanton, Calif.) in the 40th minute after he shot one off of a post rebound.
In the second half, Caltech opened up the scoring and cut the deficit to one in the 76th minute from Alec Sands who created an incredible angle from the right side. But a minute later Whittier would tally their third goal of the contest from James Suri (Lake Forest, Calif.) who put a header on goal coming off of a cross from Dylan Fortin (San Diego, Calif.). Then with just under a minute to play, WC would add the final blow as Maxwell would add his second goal of the contest again putting another header to the back of the goal thanks to an assist from Giovanni Mayoral (Downey, Calif.).
Whittier outshot Caltech 28-4 and had an astounding 17 corner kicks. Between the posts Jorge Rivas (Lake Forest, Calif.) picked up his second win on the season.
The Purple & Gold remain in SCIAC competition as they travel into Los Angeles, Calif. this Saturday, September 14 as they take on Occidental College beginning at 7:00pm.
