WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College men's soccer team tried to act as spoilers Saturday evening attempting to beat Redlands on their Senior Night but couldn't complete a late comeback as they fell 2-1 at Farquhar Field.
Whittier who has been knocked out of SCIAC Post Season Tournament contention now drops to 7-7-2, 5-7-2 SCIAC, while Redlands improves to 10-8, 9-5 SCIAC.
Two first half goals from the Bulldogs would prove enough as they held on for the one goal victory. In the fourth minute, Matej Kustura would gather a loose ball and finish low post to put UR in front 1-0.
A minute later Charles Izydorek would move the score to 2-0 when he met a pin-point pass from Chase Boone with a sliding effort to tap the ball past Sophomore keeper Jorge Rivas (Lake Forest, Calif.).
Whittier was held to just four shots in the first half but would find the back of the goal in the 67th minute when Ryan Wood (Wilsmlow, England) would finish a header from Brian Russell (Torrance, Calif.) that cut the deficit in half.
Whittier attempted to find the equalizer late with shots from Russell and Devin Guthrie (Huntington Beach, Calif.) but they wouldn't be able to convert allowing Redlands to hold on for the victory.
Rivas finished with five saves against seven shots, while his counterpart Josh Haskill would pick up three saves in his first game of the season.
Russell would lead the offense with three shots with two being on goal and an assist, while Pablo Gomez (Cardiff by the Sea) took two shots himself.
Whittier has two games remaining on their schedule, Claremont-M-S on the road Monday evening at 7:00pm before taking on Pomona-Pitzer Saturday, November 1 at 7:00pm during Rage the Cage and Senior Night.
