WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College softball team remains unbeaten on the season as they cruised to the lopsided shutout sweep over Occidental College Saturday 16-0, 9-0 improving to 8-0, 4-0 SCIAC.

The Poets combined for 25 runs on 18 hits and put up their largest crooked number this season posting their second and third shutouts of the season.

Game 1 (W, 16-0)

The first game of the doubleheader lasted just five innings with the Poets scoring three in the second and thirteen in the third.  In the second Mercedez Cundiff singled to right to get things started and was brought in by a Jordan Learn double to center.  Freshman Samantha Blum then answered with her own double to left before scoring herself on a wild pitch.

In the next inning the Poets brought 17 batters to the plate recording 13 runs on eight hits putting the game away.  Alexandra Flores, Learn, Courtney DeLano and Emi Shimamoto all recorded doubles in the inning, while Alyse Gutierrez, DeLano, Cundiff, and Shimamoto all registered a single.

Learn finished 2-3 with three runs scored and three runs batted in, while Cundiff finished 2-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.  DeLano got the start in Game 1 and threw 4.0 innings surrendering a mere two hits, while striking out three en route to picking up her fourth win of the season.

Ali Goldberg for Oxy was tagged with the loss and despite giving up 12 runs in just 2.1 innings, only two were earned.

Game 2 (W, 9-0)

In the second game of the doubleheader, Blum got the start and threw a complete game giving up just one hit, while striking out three picking up her second win of the season.  She only needed a run to pick up the win but she got nine from her teammates as they scored twice in the 2nd, three in the 4th, and four in the 5th

DeLano got things started with a two run shot in the bottom of the 2nd to put the Poets in front.  Then in the bottom of the 4th, Learn and Blum got into the mix hitting home runs themselves to extend the lead to 5-0.  Then in the 5th, Whittier added insurance and put the game away thanks to a single up the middle from Cundiff and a three run shot from DeLano, her second of the game.

DeLano finished 2-3 with three runs scored and five runs batted in.  Amber Garlan received the loss going 3.0 innings giving up five runs on four hits.

Whittier returns to the diamond this Saturday, March 1 when they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on the Athena's from Claremont-M-S with doubleheader action set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
