WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's basketball team wrapped up their 2013-14 campaign Saturday with a 72-65 victory over Caltech during PAC the GAC earning their second victory of the season on Senior Night.
Prior to tip-off, Whittier recognized their two seniors who were taking part in their final game of their collegiate career. These two seniors included Danielle Hays (San Diego, Calif.) and Danielle Quinones (Marin County, Calif.).
Whittier who owned a lopsided 100-73 victory over Caltech back on January 16 survived a scare in the Graham Athletic Center as Caltech jumped out in front early 15-9 thanks to an 11-2 run. Whittier would respond with their own eight straight with jumpers from Priscilla Rodriguez (East Los Angeles, Calif.), Quinones, Kaylah Alexander (Altoona, PA), and Erica Houston (Stockton, Calif.) pulling back in front 17-15.
The Poets from that point would never trail despite the Beavers putting together five straight to pull within one 31-30 and then even at 33-33 but a last minute baseline jumper from Nicole Ruffino (Las Vegas, NV) would give WC the edge 35-33 at the break.
Out of the half, Stephanie Wong tied things up with a jumper but was immediately followed by a Carly Buechler (Greenwood Village, CO) three pointer and a Quinones layup. But Caltech hung around as the game turned into a seesaw battle until the Poets would increase their lead to ten 59-49 thanks to a three pointer from Ruffino, a free throw from Quinones, and a layup from Tiffany Thompson (Oakland, Calif.).
Caltech would make one final push scoring nine straight sparked by a three pointer from Wong to pull CIT within three 67-64 with 1:02 to play but an ensuing three ball from Quinones and two free throws from Dannika Navales-Lugtu (San Francisco, Calif.) sealed the victory for the Purple & Gold.
Quinones finished with a double double and an impressive stat line, which included 13 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and three steals. She was joined by Rodriguez and Navales-Lugtu who each had 11, while Hays chipped in with 10.
For Caltech, Kate Lewis finished with a game high 20 points to go with 14 boards, while Bridget Connor tossed in 13. Wong wrapped up the Beavers in double figures who finished with 10 points.
Whittier finishes their season 2-23, 2-14 SCIAC with both victories coming against Caltech.
