REDLANDS, Calif. – Sophomore lefty Nick Garcia had a one hitter going into the 6th inning Friday but was hit hard in the final four frames giving up six runs on 10 hits, while striking out six as the Poets saw their bats go cold in a 6-0 loss to the University Redlands.
His counterpart Hayden Haight also threw a complete game but gave up just six hits en route to his second win on the season.
Whittier has now dropped its second straight game after seeing their winning streak come to a close in a 12-10 loss to Kean University Thursday. They are now 11-7, 9-1 SCIAC, while Redlands is 7-13, 7-6 SCIAC.
After five scoreless innings the Bulldogs struck for two in the bottom of the sixth with singles from Chris Scalisi and Sean McMillan. Then in the eighth, UR added another four behind Alex Scheiwe, Jordan Dresner, and Mark Tumlinson singles that moved the score to 6-0 putting the game out of reach for the Purple & Gold.
Graham Pimm led the Poet offensive attack from the two hole finishing 3-4, while Julian Barzilli, Ben Cerami, and Armando Valdez all added hits.
Whittier returns to the diamond tomorrow, Saturday, March 15 when they wrap up the three game series against Redlands at Memorial Field with first pitches set for 11:00am and 2:30pm.
