Poets sweep Pomona-Pitzer; Shelley Whitaker earns 100th victory

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College softball team swept the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Saturday earning 8-3 and 6-0 victories to improve to 11-3, 7-3 SCIAC, while Head Coach Shelley Whitaker earned her 101th and 102nd victories in her Whittier College Coaching career 

Senior Mickala Gonzales single handily led the Poets to the sweep connecting on three homeruns bringing her total on the season to six.  

Game 1 (W, 8-3)

The Poets have now won three of their last four games, while Courtney DeLano picked up her sixth victory on the season.  She threw a complete game giving up three runs on seven hits to go with four strikeouts.  

After two scoreless innings, Whittier struck for two in the 3rd after an error by the shortstop brought in Samantha Blum and DeLano.  The Poets would add another in the 4th after a solo shot from Gonzales but the Sagehens would get on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning after an error by the right fielder.  But in the 5th, the Poets would add to their lead getting three runs off the bat of Gonzales on her second homerun before putting the game away in the 7th with two more coming across.

Gonzales finished 3-4 with three runs scored and four runs batted in with Mercedez Cundiff, DeLano, and Blum registering two hits apiece.          

Game 2 (W, 6-0)

Freshman Blum got the start in game two throwing a complete game six-hit shutout picking up her third win on the season.  DeLano would give her all of the support she would need with an RBI single in the 2nd before Jordan Learn would add to it in the 4th with an RBI single up the middle. 

Gonzales would continue where she left off in game one hitting her third homerun of the day in the 6th bringing in two runs before the Purple & Gold would put the game out of reach in the 7th adding two insurance runs. 

DeLano finished 2-3 with an RBI, while Learn was 2-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. 

Whittier returns home this Friday, March 14 when they host La Verne at Palmer Field with game times set for 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
