LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team coming off of a road victory against Pomona-Pitzer earning a spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) post Season Tournament couldn't stop the hot bats of the University of La Verne as they fell 12-2 on the road.
Joe Winterburn blasted two homeruns for the Leopards and La Verne put together a big fourth inning thanks to three costly Whittier errors that propelled them to the victory in just eight innings.
After giving up two runs in the bottom half of the first, Whittier would respond in the third cutting the deficit in half with a sacrifice fly from Willie Renard that scored Ben Cerami.
But La Verne would add six in the fourth to open the game up before Whittier would get their second run in the sixth behind another sacrifice fly from Cerami that plated Graham Pimm
This would be the last run scored for the Purple & Gold as ULV would add one in the sixth and three in the eighth en route to the lopsided victory.
Freshman Matt Zolkiewicz got his first collegiate start after suffering an injury earlier in the year and lasted only one inning giving up two runs on one hit. He was relieved by Thomas Hemington who gave up six runs all unearned on four hits.
Four hits were recorded on the afternoon for the Poets with Cerami going 1-2 with a run scored and a run batted in.
