WHITTIER, Calif. – Despite a minor hiccup in the first set, the Poets were able to roll past the visiting Beavers of Caltech Tuesday evening as they earned a 25-15, 25-9, 25-10 victory.
With the win the Poets have now won their third straight contest and now move to 5-7, 4-2 SCIAC, which places them third in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Standings (SCIAC).
Whittier hit .293 as a team starting off the evening hitting .333 in the first set. Alexis Mills (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Vanessa Rodriguez (Wildumar, Calif.) led the Poets on offense finishing with eight kills apiece. Jennifer Estrada (Pasadena, Calif.) had eight digs and Lauren Pogue (Simi Valley, Calif.) picked up 12 assists, while Torrey Mitsunaga (Culver City, Calif.) had 10.
It was all Whittier as they jumped out in front 14-5 in the first set and then 20-9 but a small rally by the Beavers would pull CIT within nine at 24-15 but in the end the Purple & Gold would put away the frame with a kill from Haley Whyte (Mission Viejo, Calif.).
In the second set the Poets used an 8-0 run to start things off en route to winning 25-9 and then wrapped up the match in the third going in front 16-5 before clinching the victory 25-10.
Whittier returns to the court this Friday, October 3 when they travel to La Verne, Calif. to take on the University of La Verne beginning at 7:30pm.
