PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer Team got back on track Wednesday afternoon as they cruised past the California Institute of Technology 5-2 that snapped a two game losing streak.
This marks the second win for the Poets over Caltech this season as they outscored the Beavers 14-4 as they improved to 5-7-1, 4-6-1 SCIAC.
Whittier jumped in front quickly 1-0 in the first 20 minutes. Ryan Wood (Wilsmlow, England) got back into the scoring category who had a two touch in the box finishing to the bottom left corner after being fed by freshman Jacob Conlon (Fullerton, Calif.).
Conlon would pick up his second straight assist 14 minutes later but this time feeding James Suri (Lake Forest, Calif.), who is back from injury putting in a ball from the wing that he would put away from 15 yards out.
Caltech though would put up a fight finding the back of the net in the 37th minute with Schaeffer Reed heading in a goal from 12 yards out coming off a free kick from Jack Banaszak, which pulled CIT within one at the break.
Wood would strike quickly three minutes into the second period that extended the Poet lead back to two. He would also add an assist in the 65th feeding Pablo Gomez (Cardiff by the Sea) from the right side who would finish from 30 yards. Reed for the Beavers would add another though soon after that kept CIT within striking distance but Gomez would put away any chance of a comeback as he curled a free kick from 25 yards out to the bottom left corner that sealed the victory for the Purple & Gold.
Whittier controlled both sides of the field outshooting Caltech 23-11 and held the advantage on corner kicks at 9-3. Griffin Thomas (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) got the start in goal and played all 90:00 picking up one save against three shots, while four players registered three shots (Wood, Gomez, Conlon, David Shanoda (Cairo, Egypt))
