LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team struggled offensively Saturday morning as they dropped a tough road contest 6-0 to Occidental College.
The previous time these two teams met, the Poets played the Tigers to a draw, but today, Oxy saw their offense come alive with two goals coming from Daniel Lawson. With the loss the Poets drop to 5-8-1, 4-7-1 SCIAC, while Occidental remains with just one loss on the season at 11-1-3, 8-1-3 SCIAC.
Valdair Martines-Lopes and Liam Walsh scored the first two goals for Oxy in the first half coming on free kicks. Martins-Lopes bent in a shot in the 29th minute and Walsh' found the back of the net with a shot that deflected off the Whittier wall. In the second, Ariel Rosso would add his first of the game coming on a rebound in the 50th minute before Lawson went back to back.
The last tally was added by Morgan Bennett-Smith in the 74th minute.
Whittier was outshot for the game 30-9 and despite getting three corner kicks in the second half was at a disadvantage by two overall at 5-3.
Darren Holmes (Newcastle, UK), Jacob Schaniel (San Diego, Calif.), and Dylan Fortin (San Diego, Calif.) each recorded two shot a piece.
Whittier has a short turn-around as they host Cal Lutheran University this Monday, October 19 beginning at 7:00pm.
