ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team attempted the upset of Chapman University who sits in 2nd Place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings Monday evening but couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 2-1.
This marks the Poets second straight loss and third in their past four games as they drop to 5-10-2, 4-9-2 SCIAC, while Chapman improves to 11-5-3, 10-4-1 SCIAC.
Whittier was outshot 25-4 for the game with two shots coming in each half forcing them to play in the defensive half a majority of the game, led by Jorge Rivas (Lake Forest, Calif.) who turned away nine shots in 90:00 minutes of action.
Despite the offensive attack by the Panthers, the Poets were able to limit CU to just one goal in the first half. Nico Arellanes added it just 11 minutes in after dribbling into the box and finding the net off the deflection.
In the second, Gino Belassen put the Panthers up 2-0 who was fed by Boston Kimmel at the top of the penalty area in the 59th minute.
Whittier began pushing soon after and four minutes later got onto the scoreboard. Dylan Fortin (San Diego, Calif.) absorbed a high pass, which he spun and fired off to the lower right corner that cut the deficit to one, but that would be as close as they would get as they wouldn't be able to get a shot on frame after that allowing Chapman to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Darren Holmes (Newcastle, UK) led the offense with two shots.
Whittier rounds out their 2015 Schedule tomorrow, Wednesday, October 28 as they take on La Verne beginning at 7:00pm.
