PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College Volleyball team rounded out their 2015 regular season Saturday completing the clean sweep over Caltech 25-6, 25-24, 26-24 extending their winning streak to five games.
Completing one of the most impressive single seasons in program history, Whittier finished the regular season 19-9, 10-6 SCIAC and earned the program's second trip to the SCIAC Post Season Tournament and the first under the tutelage of Chris Duarte-McDermott.
Whittier jumped out to a quick start hitting .417 in the first set en route to the lopsided 25-6 win in which they led early 7-0. In the second they continued their offensive attack hitting .650 again going out in front 5-0 before putting together a mid-set run of five straight and finishing off the frame scoring seven of the last nine points.
In the final set, Caltech battled getting within a point of its first SCIAC set won but couldn't convert it as they saw Kyriaki Tsigkounis (Rialto, Calif.) and Haley Whyte (Mission Viejo, Calif.) come up with kills and Clarissa Standafer (Alta Loma, Calif.) with a service ace that put away the sweep for the Purple & Gold.
14 players saw time as Olive Anagu (Culver City, Calif.) led the offense with 11 kills on 19 attempts for a .368 hitting percentage. Whyte totaled nine kills and hit .462 with four blocks (1 solo/3 assisted), Standafer totaled 11 digs in the backrow, while Hunter Durham (Kennewick, WA) finished with nine. Torrey Mitsunaga (Culver City, Calif.) finished with 12 assists, while freshman Hannah Joyce (Newport Beach, Calif.) got quality time with 19 assists.
Whittier enters into the SCIAC Post Season Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face off against the No. 1 seeded Regals of Cal Lutheran University Thursday, November 5 beginning at 7:30pm up in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
