WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Volleyball team earned their fifth straight victory Tuesday night as they earned a lopsided 25-18, 25-8, 25-11 over Caltech.
With the win the Poets improve to 12-5, 4-3 SCIAC, have won their third straight contest in straight sets, is now in sole possession of fourth place in the SCIAC Standings, and is off to one of the best starts in program history.
The Poets saw 14 players see the court this evening as they hit .313 as a squad. The first set was tight as the Beavers put together an 8-1 run that pulled them within one at 10-9, but Whittier would bounce back to go on their own with seven straight that extended the lead back to five before they ran away with it winning by seven.
In the second they started off hot going in front 10-4 and kept CIT under double digits as they used a 12-2 run to close out the frame.
Then in the third, they would take a 4-0 lead and never looked back as they continued to lay down the firepower going in front 18-5 before closing off the sweep with a block by Rebecca Slattery (Los Altos, Calif.) and Alexis Mills (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.).
Casie Lowden (Glendora, Calif.) hit double digits in kills with 11 on 20 attempts for a .450 hitting percentage to go with seven digs. Olive Anagu (Culver City, Calif.) finished with seven kills, freshman Corie Hammock (Portland, OR) totaled six, Haley Whyte (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had six and five block assists, Jasmine Tong (Fullerton, Calif.) and Hannah Joyce (Newport Beach, Calif.) split the setting duties with 16 and 12, each respectively and Jennifer Estrada (Pasadena, Calif.) tallied 11 digs in the backrow.
Whittier has a big conference match-up this Friday evening, October 9 as they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer who sit in fifth place right behind the Purple & Gold. Game time is set for 7:30pm.
