ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College football team proved no test for the Chapman University Panthers Saturday as they fell 63-15 to finish 2015 winless 0-9, 0-7 SCIAC.
The defensive unit for the Purple & Gold stood strong on Chapman's opening possession forcing a three and out but the Panthers would answer on the Poets opening series as Drew DeMarco picked off Joseph Anderson (Cypress, Calif.) on his first pass attempt taking it back 48 yards for an opening pick-six.
After going three and out on their next series, Whittier would fall unfortunate again but this time on special teams as Ethan Weinstein would return a 59-yard punt down to Whittier's nine-yard line before Andrew Chavez found Riley Guilbeault in the back of the endzone that put CU in front 14-0.
Chapman went on to score a touchdown in each of its next six drives to go up 56-3 with Whittier's field goal coming from 43-yards out from Eric Voss (Temecula, Calif.) with 14:20 remaining in the second.
After being shutout in the third, Whittier would add the final two scores in the fourth, the first coming on a two yard run from Miguel Redmond (San Jose, Calif.), which capped off an eight play, 73-yard drive that covered 4:25 and the other where Anderson found Justin Vlahos (Bakersfield, Calif.) for a 25-yard hook-up that again finished off a big drive this time for six plays for 70-yards.
But these would be the final points added by Whittier as Chapman would cruise to the lopsided 63-15 victory at Chapman Stadium.
Anderson finished 22-41 for 218 yards and a touchdown. Joey Willm (Arcadia, Calif.) led the running backs with 13 attempts for 44 yards and Vlahos led the receivers with five catches for 89 yards averaging 17.8 yards per catch.
Defensively, Diego Villasenor (Linda, Calif.) and Austin Brasher (El Segundo, Calif.) finished with six tackles apiece, with Brasher finishing with 1.5 tackles for losses.
