WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team continues to look good at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center as they improved to 9-1 at home after rolling past Caltech 15-6 Saturday morning.
On a day where Philosophy professor Paul Kjellberg was recognized prior to the game for his committed excellence to teaching and being a mentor for a number of the men's water polo players. The Purple & Gold showed off their offensive attack from eight different players in front of their guest coach as they improved to 16-10, 5-1 SCIAC.
The starting unit for Whittier never saw the pool as the second and third teams got the playing time led by Tyler Breen (Hillsborough, Calif.) who finished with three goals. The poets opened up the scoring with four unanswered before the Beavers would tack on their first with a last second strike from Blackwood.
Caltech added the first in the second quarter that cut the deficit to two but that's as close as they would get as Whittier would round out the half with four goals giving them an 8-3 lead at the break.
In the third, just three goals were added from both teams with Whittier holding the slight edge 2-1 extending their lead to 10-4. Then in the fourth, the Poets poured it on adding another five that secured the home victory with two coming from Hunter Manson (Kailua, HI).
In goal, Christopher Ibarra (Chino, Calif.) and Nikolas Gregov (Homestead, Calif.) got playing time, Ibarra picking up five saves and Gregov with one.
Whittier has two games remaining on their regular season schedule with Chapman on the road this Wednesday, November 11 beginning at 7:00pm before returning home next Saturday, November 14 for Senior Day as they take on La Verne beginning at 11:00am.
