LANCASTER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Basketball team earned their first win of the season Thursday night in impressive fashion as they dominated both ends of the floor in a 111-79 rout of West Coast Baptist.

In the win the Poets broke the single game record for most threes made in a single game since 1996-97 (13) after tossing in 16 led by Ben Maynard (Pasadena, Calif.) who had four.

All five starters and two bench players recorded double digit scoring efforts led by Maynard who had 16 on 6-of-13 shooting, going 50% (4-8) from three point territory and six boards.

It was a tight game in the early stages with the Poets holding a slight 19-18 edge at the 12:37 mark.  Whittier used an 8-0 run out of the gates capped off with a triple from Maynard before a run by WCB, which included back to back tres from Nicholas Corl and Imaan Vicente cut the deficit to two.

The one point differential was as close as the Eagles would get as Whittier would roll from there outscoring WCB 39-20 over the final 12:00, which included an ensuing 19-5 run that gave the Purple & Gold a 58-38 lead at the break. 

In the second, the Poets continued to roll outscoring the Eagles 53-41, and put together an early 17-2 spurt that put the game on ice.   

14 players saw action with junior transfers Mike Jones-Mensah (Ghana, Africa) and Chris Kapano (Los Alamitos, Calif.) tossing in 14 points apiece.  FreshmanJake Moore (Dallas, TX) continues with his hot hand going 5-of-6 from the field, which included a 3-for-4 clip from deep for 13 points, whileEric Jennings (Fontana, Calif.) had 11 points and four boards running the point.

Off the bench junior transfer Anthony Martinez (Cerritos, Calif.) tossed in 12 points and four assists, while Michael Alvarez (Long Beach, Calif.) was clutch down the stretch going 5-for-6 from the field for 11 points. 

Whittier returns to the court next Friday, December 11 for their home opener when they host West Coast Baptist in the Graham Athletic Center beginning at 8:00pm.
