WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team continues to struggle to bring runs across the plate as they were swept 13-0 and 6-2 to the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer as they drop the three game series.
Sam Fox did the damage for the Sagehens as he connected on three homeruns over the two games with two coming in game one and the other in the nightcap.
With the sweep, the Sagehens improve to 11-3 overall on the season and 8-1 in the SCIAC, putting them in first place after three conference weekends. Whittier slips to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Whittier gathered four hits in game one all coming from four different players. Matt Webster (Yorba Linda, Calif.) picked up the loss going 2.1 innings giving up seven runs on seven hits. Cameron Yen for Pomona-Pitzer threw the complete game improving to 4-0.
Fox picked up six RBI's and finished the day 5-for-10 at the plate with four runs scored and eight runs batted in.
In game two, PP would again strike first with two runs in the third coming from a Fox homerun. Jake Bruml would double in Fox in the 6th that moved the score to 3-0 and PP would add another the next inning that extended the Sagehen lead to four. Whittier got on the board in the 7th thanks a Cody Martinez (Whittier, Calif.) single up the middle that brought in Stephen Zavala (Whittier, Calif.) and Graham Pimm (Clayton, Calif.). That would pull the Poets within two but that's as close as they would get as another two runs would be added over the final two innings by Pomona-Pitzer that helped them secure the sweep.
Pimm finished game two 2-3 with a run scored. Zavala was 2-4 with a run scored and Martinez was 2-3 with two runs batted in.
Justin Ushio (Mililani, HI) was handed the loss going 5.0 innings giving up two runs on seven hits, while Bruml for PP picked up his third win going 7.0 innings before David Gerics came in to pick up the save.
Whittier opens a three game series with La Verne this weekend. They host the Leopards this Friday, March 6 beginning at 2:30pm and will play a doubleheader on the road the following day with game times set for 11:00am and 2:30pm.
