RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Whittier College softball team completed the sweep over La Sierra University Saturday in demanding fashion as they earned victories of 15-3 and 7-1 to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Game 1 (W, 15-3)
After a scoreless first inning the Poets would strike for five runs in the second. Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) would lead things off with a walk. Alyse Gutierrez (West Covina, Calif.) would reach safely following a Golden Eagle error and Ashlyn Canchola (La Verne, Calif.) would bring them all home with a three run shot down the left field line, her first of her career that came on a full count.
With one out, the Poets continued to add but this time sparked by a Tara Ann Dumlao (Mililani, HI) double to deep left center right before an Alexandra Flores (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) two run shot to left.
La Sierra would get two back in the bottom half of the inning but Whittier would add ten more runs over the final four innings. The Poets got the bases loaded in the 4th but managed just one run, they would get two more in the 5th, and another in the 6th, but would put the game out of reach in the 7th when they put up a six spot on five hits.
Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) would earn the win going 6.0 innings giving up three runs on four hits and improves to 2-0. Flores finished 3-6 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Mercedez Cundiff (Rowland, Calif.) was 3-5 with three RBI's and a run scored and Canchola finished 3-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in.
Game 2 (W, 7-1)
In the second game Blum pitched a gem going 4.0 innings of shutout softball picking up her third win on the season. She was relieved by Rachel Alhanati (Lake Forest, Calif.) who went the final 3.0 innings giving up one run on two hits.
Flores and Cundiff led the offense each going 2-4 with a combined two runs scored and six runs batted in.
The Poets would get a run in the 2nd and two in the 3rd but would put up three in the 4th that put the game out of reach. They would add an insurance run in the 6th but the game was already decided as WC held on for the six run victory.
The Poets will return to the diamond this Saturday, February 14 as they open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play when they host Chapman University with game times set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
