WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College softball team held off Williams College 1-0 Monday afternoon at Palmer Field in a pitcher's duel.
With the win the Poets have now won three straight and six of their last seven contests and improve to 15-5.
Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) and Emma Harrington battled in the circle combining for 13 strikeouts both throwing complete games.
After two scoreless innings the Poets finally struck for the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the third. Sarah Miller (Vista, Calif.) started things off with a single to left. Emi Shimamoto (Santa Clarita, Calif.) then doubled to left that put two runners in scoring position and Samantha Mellano (Fullerton, Calif.) soon followed getting hit by a pitch that loaded the bases.
With two outs, Ashlyn Canchola (La Verne, Calif.) came through once again singling to the right side that brought in one but the rally would end there as Shimamoto was tagged out at home trying to move from second.
This would be the only run Whittier would need as Blum would shut down the Ephs over the final four innings picking up her 10th win on the season.
Miller was 2-2 on the day scoring the only run. Shimamoto, Mercedez Cundiff (Rowland, Calif.), and Canchola were all 1-3.
Whittier has a quick turnaround as they host Linfield, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24 in a doubleheader with game times set for 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
