WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team opened up their round robin schedule Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field but couldn't find the offense as they fell 11-1 to Pomona-Pitzer.
Whittier ends their head-to head match-up with PP 0-4 being outscored on the season by the Sagehens 30-3.
Pomona-Pitzer scored five times in the first two innings getting after southpaw Nick Garcia (Anaheim, Calif.) who earned the loss going 6.0 innings giving up seven runs on 10 hits.
Sam Fox extended his hitting streak to 26 games, while Tanner Nishioka added a grand slam in the seventh that enforced the SCIAC's 10-run rule.
Fox singled to start the game and push his hitting streak to 26 games in his first at bat. Simon Rosenbaum followed with a double, and Fox later came in on a wild pitch while Rosenbaum scored on an RBI groundout from Jake Bruml.
Whittier looked like they would get something going in the bottom half of the first with an opening single from Jonathan Whipple (Sandy, UT) into right but was later doubled up following a hard hit ball by Graham Pimm (Clayton, Calif.) right to the third baseman that ended the rally.
With two outs in the second, PP added another three. Kevin Jordan singled and Fox followed with a double. Nishioka walked to load the bases, a Rosenbaum walk forced in a run and Bruml added a two-run single to make it 5-0.
Adam Hinthorne added an RBI single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh before Nishioka hit a grand slam with two outs that moved the score to 11-1 propelling Pomona-Pitzer to the road victory.
Whittier's lone run came in the fifth. Ben Cerami (Berkeley, Calif.) led things off with a double down the left field line. Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.) moved him over to third with a fly out and Dylan DeBrouwer (Manteca, Calif.) brought him in with a groundout to the first baseman.
Whipple finished the game 2-3 and was the lone Poet with multiple hits, while Stephen Zavala (Whittier, Calif.), Cerami, and Macey were the other three that reached base.
Whittier hits the road for two games this weekend. They take on Chapman this Saturday, April 25 beginning at 11:00am and then La Verne on Sunday, April 26 beginning at 3:00pm.
