ORANGE, Calif. – After dropping the regular season series with Chapman University, the Whittier College baseball team finally pulled through Saturday morning earning an 8-6 road victory over the Panthers.
With the win the Poets spoiled Chapman's playoff hopes as they improved to 10-27, 8-18 SCIAC.
The Panthers were up 5-0 in the sixth inning and cruising before things fell apart. Chapman committed five errors and Whittier would come back to score six unearned runs in the inning that tied things up.
Matt Smith went six strong innings for CU allowing just one base runner, while striking out eight before the fateful frame where he threw away three balls at first.
Andrew Lamar (Alta Loma, Calif.) led the offense going 1-3 with a run scored and two RBI's, which included a sacrifice bunt that scored Chris Sekiguchi (Aiea, HI) who led off the inning with a triple to right field. Royce Komesu (Mililani, HI) picked up the win going the final 5.0 innings giving up one run on five hits to improve to 2-3.
Whittier has a quick turn around as they travel to La Verne, Calif. tomorrow, Sunday, April 26 as they take on the University of La Verne beginning at 3:00pm.
