REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team saw their losing skid move to four games Wednesday night as they dropped a 3-0 contest to the University of Redlands at Farquhar Field.
In the last four games the Poets have combined for just one goal and have been outscored 8-1 as they drop to 3-4-1, 2-3-1 SCIAC.
Redlands (5-2-2, 3-2-1 SCIAC) first shot attempt would find the back of the net from Sergio Valencia in the fifth minute. After a failed clear attempt from Jorge Rivas (Lake Forest, Calif.), Valencia corralled the attempt and hammered home a two-touch that skipped into the lower-left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
The Purple & Gold would then pick it up the rest of the half playing strong on both ends taking five shots. Their first came right before the goal from Ricardo Pena (Bell Gardens, Calif.) who forced Bulldog keeper Josh Haskill to begin working early.
The others came from Ryan Wood (Wilmslow, England) who one blocked and two saved by Haskill, and Pablo Gomez (Cardiff by the Sea) who sent one high.
Despite being outshot 14-5, the Poets still trailed by just one at the break. In the second half, UR continued with their offensive pressure with Chase Boone drawing a penalty kick, which he finished to put Redlands in front 2-0. Keoni Yates would then add the final goal of the game in the 76th minute when he put away a top-shelf rocket that secured the win for the Bulldogs.
UR outshot the Poets 28-9 and led on corner kicks 5-2. Wood led the Poets with three of them with two being on goal, while James Suri (Lake Forest, Calif.) and Gomez each had two.
Rivas despite picking up the loss finished with 10 saves in 82 minutes of action.
Whittier looks to bounce back this Saturday, October 3 as they remain on the road with a match-up with Cal Lutheran University beginning at 11:00am.
